5 Reasons Why Men Should Make Their Beds Every Day

I make my bed every morning. Every single morning. This is honestly a habit that I have picked up in my last relationship. Prior to that, I wasn’t much of a “Make your bed” kind of guy. I had all the excuses for not making it, including:

1) I don’t have the time to make it

2) It is just going to get messed up again anyways

3) No one but me sees it.

The list can probably go on, but you get the gist of what I am expelling here. I never made my bed, and then I started dating someone that did. Every morning. After we moved in together, I slowly started to be the one that made the bed in the mornings, as I was the last one to get out of it. It wasn’t just that it became a habit, but rather, there are certainly psychological benefits to making your bed every morning as well.

It Starts the Day Off Properly

Nothing feels better than the feeling of accomplishment. Something trivial like making your bed can still have a positive impact on your psyche in regards to finishing a menial task such as making your bed. Ultimately, it starts the day off properly by being productive. You have finished your first productive task for the day, and it sets the tone for the rest of the day! If you haven’t seen this video yet of the commencement speech to University of Texas students by Admiral William McRaven, you should definitely check it out.  His speech extolls the very reasons why making your bed is the best start of your day.

It Encourages Your To Keep The Room Clean and Organized

Listen up, Gentlemen. A clean and organized room will go a long way in keeping your attitude and confidence high. Your living space is often a reflection of your personality and lifestyle. If it is messy and disorganized, it often I a direct reflection that your life and personality are a mess and disorganized. Making your bed every morning also encourages you to pick up those clothes and put them in the hamper, or tidy up the mess you may have made the night before.

It Improves Mood and Lowers Stress

I am a huge advocate for stress reduction. If you follow my personal page on social media, you will often hear me discuss ways to reduce stress, and how I have managed to handle immense stress to find balance, peace, and focus in my personal and business lifestyle. Making your bed improves mood and lowers stress because messiness is often stressful. It might not be overwhelmingly stressful, but tack on the stresses of every day life dealing with your job, a family, children, and your own personal health, and when something small is tacked on, like a messy bed and room, it can feel much larger than it actually is. So that little bit of stress that it relieves is a lot more beneficial than you probably initially realize.

It Leads to Better Productivity

Making your bed in the morning kickstarts a chain of other productive habits by finishing and accomplishing your first task. That feeling of accomplishment in seeing an organized and clean bed/room may be small, but gradually builds throughout the day as you continue to accomplish bigger and bigger tasks. It allows you to take charge of your day and make better decisions.

It Just Looks and Feels Better

Honestly, it may not seem like a big deal in the morning, but at the end of the day, when you are ready to get into bed. It just feels and looks better getting into a bed that is made. Pulling back those sheets and sliding right in, it is the where it is all at. Not to mention, you are going to impress the hell out of your significant other (or future SO) by building this habit now.

Take that two minutes every morning and make the rest of each day just a little bit better.
